The Kedarnath Yatra was suspended after a landslide struck near Gaurikund Gate in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district amid continuous torrential rainfall in the Kedar Valley. The landslide caused a large amount of debris and boulders to fall onto the Kedarnath trekking route, forcing authorities to halt the movement of pilgrims. The disruption comes as heavy rain continues to affect several parts of the region, increasing the risk of landslides along key pilgrimage routes. Landslide Blocks Kedarnath Trekking Route
According to officials, continuous rainfall triggered the landslide near Gaurikund Gate, depositing debris and large rocks across the pedestrian route leading to Kedarnath.
As a result, the Kedarnath Yatra has been temporarily suspended, and the movement of pilgrims has been stopped until the route is declared safe. Fata Sliding Zone Becomes Active Again
Meanwhile, concerns have resurfaced over the sensitive sliding zone near Rampur Bazaar on the Fata-Gaurikund National Highway. Authorities said renewed land subsidence has occurred between the retaining wall and the road, raising fresh questions about the durability of the slope protection work carried out earlier this year.
Safety work at the site reportedly began in February and March and was declared complete before the start of the Char Dham pilgrimage. However, the bridge at the location collapsed following heavy rainfall during the first week of June.
At the time, the National Highways Department acknowledged negligence in the construction work and said the protective measures would be rebuilt using improved standards.
Fresh landslides at the same location have prompted criticism from local residents and traders. They allege that instead of implementing a scientific and permanent solution for the vulnerable slope, only temporary measures have been undertaken despite repeated government expenditure. Residents have also questioned the quality of construction materials and the technology used for the slope stabilisation work.
Officials are expected to assess the condition of the trekking route before allowing pilgrims to resume their journey.
The suspension of the Kedarnath Yatra comes as authorities continue monitoring rainfall and landslide-prone areas across the Kedar Valley to minimise risks to pilgrims and local residents.
