Kolkata, February 21: Kolkata Police sent a notice to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Joint Director Pankaj Srivastava in connection with an extortion case. The police asked him to be present at Bhowanipore Police Station within a week. The CBI joint director was summoned two days after Anuj Sharma was appointed as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner. The former Kolkata Police Commissioner, Kumar was removed from the post and made ADG & IGP, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal.

Kumar was involved in a controversy over the investigation in the Saradha scam by the CBI. On February 3, CBI officials who reached his residence to question him in the scam were detained by the Kolkata police. The central investigating agency had said that its officials had wanted to question Kumar to plug the holes in the Saradha scam probe as he was allegedly in possession of certain key documents as a member of the SIT. CBI Grills Rajeev Kumar, Kunal Ghosh for Nearly 12 Hours over Rose Valley, Saradha Chit Fund Scams.

After the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sat of a sit-in protest against the Narendra Modi government. Kolkata police also raided the properties of the then interim CBI chief Nageshwar Rao after the incident. However, Rao said that the properties did not belong to him. Last week, Kumar was also questioned by the CBI in Shillong in connection with the Saradha Chit Fund scam following a Supreme Court directive asking him to cooperate in the investigation.
