Unseasonably cold weather has affected parts of Kullu, with temperatures dropping sharply following sustained rain and snowfall across Himachal Pradesh. The cooling trend comes alongside record-setting conditions in Shimla, highlighting the broader impact of recent weather systems in the region.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature drop is linked to persistent western disturbances over the past few days, which have brought widespread precipitation and lowered daytime and nighttime temperatures across hill districts, including Kullu. Weather Forecast Today, April 11, 2026: Check Weather Updates, Rain Predictions for Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Shimla.

Kullu Weather: Temperature Drop and Rainfall Impact

Weather officials reported that daytime temperatures across Himachal Pradesh, including Kullu, have fallen by 10 to 12°C in recent days due to continuous cloud cover and precipitation. Rainfall levels have also remained above normal. Between March 1 and April 10, the state recorded around 149 mm of rainfall, approximately 9% higher than average. In April alone, rainfall has been about 142% above normal so far.

In higher-altitude areas of Kullu district, light snowfall has also been reported, which is considered typical for April but contributes to the ongoing cold conditions. ‘Super’ El Nino Warning: Global Weather Patterns at Risk As Pacific Warms, India’s Monsoon Could Be Disrupted.

Regional Trend Reflected in Shimla Records

The broader weather pattern has been evident in Shimla, where the minimum temperature dropped to 3.6°C, marking the coldest April night in over four decades. Meteorologists said such low temperatures in April were last recorded in 1979. Daytime temperatures in Shimla also fell significantly, reaching 11.4°C, among the lowest April readings in more than a decade.

Experts noted that similar cooling trends have been observed across other districts, including Kullu, due to the same weather systems.

Forecast for Kullu and Surrounding Areas

The IMD has forecast improving weather conditions for Kullu and much of Himachal Pradesh over the next five to seven days. Clear to partly sunny skies are expected in mid-hill regions, while isolated higher-altitude areas may continue to receive light rain or snowfall in the short term.

A fresh western disturbance is likely between April 16 and 18, though its impact is expected to be limited, with only light precipitation anticipated in higher reaches and minimal effect on Kullu.

April snowfall and temperature fluctuations are not uncommon in higher Himalayan regions such as Kullu, Lahaul, and Kinnaur. However, the intensity and persistence of recent weather activity have led to sharper-than-usual temperature drops. The IMD indicated that upcoming western disturbances are expected to be weaker, suggesting relatively stable weather conditions across the state over the next 10 to 15 days.
