Kurla Landslide: 6 Killed, 2 Injured After Landslide Hits Mumbai Due to Heavy Rainfall

Six people have died and two others were injured after heavy monsoon rains triggered a landslide in Mumbai's Kurla (West) area early Wednesday morning. A portion of an adjoining hill collapsed onto several residential shanties at Gaushiya Chawl in the Chirag Nagar locality, trapping sleeping residents under soil and structural debris.

Six people were killed and two others injured after a landslide struck Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Kurla, Mumbai, early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred at around 3:48 am, with debris falling onto two to three rooms of a nearby chawl structure. Several other people are feared to be trapped under the debris, according to local residents.Β The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared the incident a Level-II emergency at around 4:32 am and launched a search-and-rescue operation, according to a report. Fire brigade teams, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel and BMC workers are involved in the operation.

Six People Killed, Two Injured

Among those who died were 28-year-old Sahil Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Samir, who were taken to Rajawadi Hospital and declared brought dead. The other two injured people identified in the initial reports are 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari. Both were admitted to Kurla Bhabha Hospital and were reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities are continuing to assess the situation as rescue teams search the affected area. BMC Had Issued Landslide Warnings

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said residents in vulnerable areas are routinely alerted about the risk of landslides and falling rocks, particularly during the monsoon. According to the civic body's statement, residents in the Hill No. 3 area of Ashok Nagar, where the incident occurred, had also been alerted about the landslide risk and awareness campaigns had been conducted.

Heavy Rain Raises Risk

The landslide occurred amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai, with authorities continuing to monitor vulnerable locations across the city. Rescue teams remain at the site, while officials are working to determine the full extent of the damage and establish whether anyone else remains trapped beneath the debris.
