A Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader from Ayodhya was allegedly beaten to death in Lucknow following a late-night dispute over cigarettes, police said on Wednesday. The victim, identified as 28-year-old Shivam Singh, succumbed to injuries during treatment at a private hospital after being attacked near a club in the Gomtinagar area, as reported by TOI. According to police officials, the incident took place outside a club in the Vibhutikhand police station area late on May 26. Shivam Singh had reportedly come to Lucknow with friends for a party when an argument broke out with a group of youths over cigarettes. The altercation later escalated into violence.
Investigators said the accused initially argued with Singh and his friends outside the club before leaving the spot. A short while later, the group allegedly returned near Kathauta Lake and attacked them with bricks and stones. Singh suffered serious head injuries during the assault. Police said Singh was found injured on the roadside in the early hours of the morning after a passerby alerted emergency services. He was first taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Gomtinagar, where he died during treatment.
Family members have alleged negligence and questioned the role of some people who were with Singh at the time of the incident. The victim’s brother claimed that those accompanying him did not provide timely help after the attack and demanded strict action against the accused. The family also alleged delays in medical treatment, claiming that the victim had to be shifted from a government hospital due to non-availability of beds. Lucknow Police have registered a case against unidentified persons and said CCTV footage from the area is being examined. Officials stated that teams have been formed to identify and arrest the attackers. Shivam Singh was associated with the BJP Yuva Morcha in Ayodhya district. His death has triggered reactions among local BJP workers, who have demanded swift arrests in the case.
