Who Is Abdulrahman Alfozan? OpenAI Engineer Arrested Over Hidden Audio Recording Device in Executive Room
OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national, was arrested by federal authorities for hiding an encrypted audio recording device in an executive conference room at the company's San Francisco headquarters. Facing federal interception charges under 18 U.S.C. § 2511(1)(b), Alfozan faces up to 5 years in prison.
A software engineer employed by OpenAI has been arrested and charged with federal crimes following allegations that he concealed a covert audio recording device inside an executive conference room at the company's San Francisco headquarters. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a national of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was taken into custody on Friday, October 9. He made his initial appearance in federal court on Tuesday, October 13, and remains in federal custody ahead of a detention hearing scheduled for October 19, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Alex G. Tse.
Discovery and Surveillance Findings
According to the unsealed federal complaint, Alfozan had been employed as an engineer at OpenAI since July 2025. On or about September 30, 2026, company personnel discovered a hidden recording device inserted into a USB port behind a television in an executive conference room, reports the US Department of Justice. Investigators determined the device had been installed on or about September 28, 2026, wrapped in toilet paper, and that its data files were encrypted. Closed-circuit television footage reviewed by investigators showed Alfozan near the room on multiple occasions despite lacking authorisation to access or participate in meetings held there. Federal prosecutors noted that the conference room frequently hosted discussions covering highly confidential technical, commercial, and strategic matters, including proprietary research, product development, nonpublic technical progress, government engagements, and business relationships.
Digital forensics outlined in the complaint revealed extensive preparatory activity. Prior to the device's installation, Alfozan allegedly used a productivity tool to search for building addresses, room capacities, calendars, and schedules for leadership and partner meetings. Furthermore, a linked chatbot account associated with Alfozan's spouse submitted numerous prompts between September 24 and September 30 concerning building, customising, encrypting, and remotely accessing continuous audio recorders, specifically referencing unique MAC addresses and attributes tied to the recovered device.
Investigators also stated that on October 5, 2026, Alfozan returned to check behind the conference room television and separately left an unattended bag in a different room containing a second similar recording device, alongside his wallet and identification.
Law Enforcement and Official Statements
Federal authorities emphasised the national security implications of protecting advanced technology sectors. “The Bay Area and Silicon Valley lead the world in developing tomorrow's technology, and our Office will continue to stand at the forefront of protecting that American innovation,” said U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian. “For us it is a matter of national security. This arrest highlights our relentless efforts in partnership with the FBI to identify and prosecute those who seek to steal our technology, as alleged in the complaint," he added.
FBI Director Kash Patel underscored the priority placed on safeguarding artificial intelligence advancements: “According to the complaint unsealed today, Abdulrahman Alfozan allegedly concealed a covert recording device inside his employer's executive conference room to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company's super intelligence technology. Protecting American SI innovation is essential to safeguarding our nation's economic strength and national security, and the FBI views that mission as one of our highest counterintelligence priorities.”
Special Agent in Charge Scott Schelble of the FBI San Francisco Field Office added: “Any attempt to illicitly obtain protected information from U.S. super intelligence and technology companies threatens both American innovation and the national security interests those advancements support. The FBI remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting sensitive research and proprietary technology.” ChatGPT Gets ‘Intelligent UI’: OpenAI Adds Interactive Tools, Diagrams and Visual Responses.
FBI's Investigation Is Ongoing and We Will Continue To Support Their Work
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

Legal Charges and Potential Penalties
Alfozan is charged with using or endeavouring to use an electronic, mechanical, or other device to intercept oral communications, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2511(1)(b). If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in federal prison, a fine of up to USD 250,000, and a three-year term of supervised release.
