Indian Embassy Introduces AI Avatar Dewi
The Embassy of India in Jakarta introduced Dewi as its new AI-powered digital face in a post on X on October 13. The mission encouraged people to follow its official account for updates and information through the initiative.
The embassy said Dewi would bring information about culture, travel, scholarships, business, investment opportunities and consular updates closer to audiences. It also highlighted the avatar’s role in sharing stories and updates about the India-Indonesia partnership. Chakravorty separately welcomed the initiative on the occasion of Navaratri and Durga Puja, saying the AI avatar was ready to guide its followers.
Dewi to Promote India-Indonesia Engagement
The initiative seeks to use digital communication to expand awareness of India's cultural, educational and economic opportunities among people in Indonesia. It also provides another channel for the embassy to communicate information about its activities and services.
India and Indonesia maintain ties across political, defence, security, trade and cultural sectors. Their relationship has developed under India's Act East policy, which focuses on strengthening engagement with Southeast Asian countries. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also visited India during the 2026 BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13, reflecting continued high-level engagement between the two countries.
Indian Diplomatic Missions Expand Use of AI
Dewi's introduction comes amid a broader effort by Indian diplomatic missions to use AI-powered tools and digital platforms for public outreach and citizen services.
In August 2026, the Consulate General of India in Munich introduced an AI avatar named ‘Sarathi’ to provide information on passports, visas, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) services and other consular matters. Indian missions have also used chatbots and digital assistants to respond to frequently asked questions and improve access to official information.
These initiatives reflect a growing emphasis on technology-led communication, with diplomatic missions seeking to make information more accessible through digital and audiovisual formats.
