The incident, reportedly taking place late at night, has prompted the Tribal Affairs Department to constitute a committee to investigate the allegations and examine the hostel’s supervision and security arrangements.
The incident was reported from the Raja Shankar Shah-Raghunath Shah government senior and junior boys’ hostel in the Patha Sihora area of Nainpur. According to the students, they were woken from their beds at around 1 am and questioned over allegations of stealing money. They alleged that they were subsequently beaten with belts. The students further alleged that burning embers were placed on their hands, causing burns and blisters. They also claimed that the hostel superintendent and security personnel were not present when the alleged incident occurred. One of the students reportedly photographed his injured hand around three days after the alleged incident and sent the image to his father. After the family learned about the injuries, the students were taken to Dindori for medical treatment, according to hostel authorities.
The allegations have raised questions over the safety and supervision of students at the hostel. Local residents have sought a detailed inquiry into how the alleged assault took place and whether adequate security arrangements were in place. Assistant Commissioner of the Tribal Affairs Department Arun Shukla said the matter had come to his notice and that a committee had been formed to investigate it.
