Kolkata, October 5: Ahead of the Mahalaya Festival, beginning October 8, the Kolkata Police has issued a traffic advisory in the interest of public safety to avoid confusion in connectivity during the festive season. Mahalaya will be celebrated on October 8 this year. The festival is observed seven-days before the start of Durga Puja. No goods and vehicles will be allowed to move along the Strand Road and St Georges Gate Road between Raja Woodmunt Street and Hastings Crossing from 04.00 hrs to 16.00 hrs on 8th October 2018.

The Kolkata Police has mentioned that it would not allow vehicles to move from various routes including Rabindra Sarani and KK Tagore Street Crossing near Ganesh Talkies, BT Road and Raja Manindra Road Crossing, Grey Street and BK Pal Avenue Crossing, Manicktala Crossing among others. The Goods Vehicles from Posta Market Complex will be diverted along KK Tagore Street, Kalakar Street, MG Road, thereafter CR Avenue. Meanwhile, the Aukland Road will be shut from government place (w) for all types of vehicles. The Mahalaya Festival will be celebrated with great pomp and gaiety across West Bengal. The word "Mahalaya" is formed of two words "Maha" or grand and "Alaya" meaning abode. The day marks the end of Pitri Paksha or Pitru Paksha and the beginning of Devi Paksha. On this day, Bengalis perform several rituals while chants, mantras and devotional songs are sung to invite Maa Durga to descend on Earth and protect mankind from all the evils.
