The incident occurred around 2:00 AM at an aided residential Ashram school in Japtalai village, located in the Dhanora taluka of Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district. Nearly 79 girl students were sleeping on the floor of their hostel room when a snake entered the premises, biting several children before the alarm was raised. The school is operated by the Kuparlingo Educational and Cultural Development Research Institute, an organization associated with former Member of Parliament Marotrao Kowase. The affected children were immediately rushed to a nearby primary health facility in Dhanora. Two of the students passed away while undergoing initial treatment, while a third was emergency-shifted to the District General Hospital in Gadchiroli, where she later succumbed. The deceased have been identified as Anu Koreti (Class 2), Deepika Lakda (Class 6), and Sushmita Mandal (Class 8).
According to Dr. Manish Meshram, a cardiologist at the District General Hospital in Gadchiroli, medical staff are continuously monitoring the surviving victims. Class 5 student Deepika Bitkusai Madavi remains in critical condition, while two other girls are currently listed as serious. Fourteen other students are under observation to ensure no symptoms were missed and to provide psychological reassurance to those distressed by the incident. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that he has been apprised of the tragedy and has directed local administration to submit a comprehensive report detailing the event and the emergency medical response.
