Six girl students at the Zilla Parishad-run Rajarshi Shahu Chhatrapati Vidyaniketan Residential Sports School in Karveer, Maharashtra, were reportedly bitten by rats over two nights and taken to a private hospital for treatment. Parents blamed poor hostel maintenance, alleging the ageing building has become infested with rats due to long-standing neglect.
Six girl students at the Zilla Parishad-run Rajarshi Shahu Chhatrapati Vidyaniketan Residential Sports School in Karveer, Maharashtra, were reportedly bitten by rats over two consecutive nights, prompting concern among parents and raising questions about the condition of the hostel building. The students were later taken to a private hospital, where they received medical treatment.
The incident has triggered criticism from parents and local residents, who alleged poor maintenance and administrative neglect at the residential school. They claim the hostel building has long suffered from structural issues, including an ageing roof that has become a nesting place for rats.
Rat Bite Incidents Reported Over Two Nights
According to information available, the incidents occurred in Room No. 2 of the Tararani Sadan residential block, where six girls were reportedly bitten by rats while sleeping. After learning about the incidents, parents rushed to the school and shifted the injured students to a private hospital for treatment.
No information has been released indicating that the students sustained life-threatening injuries. Parents and local residents alleged that the hostel building has not received adequate maintenance despite accommodating around 100 girl students.
According to them, the school's roof is old and damaged, allowing rats to build nests inside the structure. They argued that the deteriorating condition of the residential block has created health and safety risks for students living on the campus.
The incident has also prompted criticism of the Zilla Parishad administration. Parents alleged that nearly INR 10 crore was spent on constructing a cultural hall adjacent to the school, while insufficient attention was given to repairing and maintaining the students' residential building. They claimed that the current situation reflects long-standing neglect of the hostel infrastructure.
The Rajarshi Shahu Chhatrapati Vidyaniketan Residential Sports School was established in 1968 and serves students through a residential sports education programme. The latest incident has renewed concerns over the upkeep of hostel facilities in government-run educational institutions, with parents calling for immediate repairs and improved living conditions to ensure student safety. Authorities have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the incident or announced any action to address the reported maintenance issues.
