Thousands of students and parents across Maharashtra have been left in uncertainty after Mahesh Tutorials abruptly shut 33 coaching centres, disrupting classes for nearly 2,500 students midway through the academic year. The shutdown has affected students preparing for SSC, HSC, CBSE and ICSE examinations, as well as those enrolled in the institute's integrated coaching programmes. Teachers and non-teaching staff have also been impacted by the sudden decision.
Financial Troubles Behind the Closure
The institute's parent company, MT Educare, has been undergoing the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) since December 2022 following proceedings initiated by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
Reports indicate that the company has been facing mounting financial stress, with outstanding dues of around тВ╣74.29 crore. Parents Seek Clarity on Fees and Academic Future
The abrupt closure has triggered anxiety among parents, many of whom had already paid fees for the full academic year. Several families are demanding a fee audit, pro-rata refunds and a clear roadmap for their children's education.
Parents have also approached the Maharashtra government, urging authorities to intervene and ensure that students do not suffer academic losses because of the institute's financial difficulties.
Arihant Academy Offers Support
Amid the uncertainty, Arihant Academy has announced that it will accommodate eligible students from Mahesh Tutorials on humanitarian grounds. However, the academy clarified that it has neither acquired nor merged with MT Educare and is only helping affected students continue their studies.
While the arrangement offers temporary relief, many parents remain concerned about changes in faculty, study schedules and the lack of clarity regarding fee adjustments.
Long-Running Coaching Brand Faces Uncertain Future
Founded in 1988, Mahesh Tutorials was one of Maharashtra's best-known coaching institutes, particularly in the SSC and HSC segment. Its sudden closure after nearly four decades has renewed calls for stronger regulation of private coaching institutes and better safeguards to protect students and parents from abrupt disruptions.
As questions remain over refunds, staff salaries and the company's future, affected families are awaiting further clarification from the management and relevant authorities.
