A 15-year-old Class 10 student died after suddenly collapsing while playing volleyball with friends near Surathkal in Karnataka's Mangaluru district on Wednesday, prompting the state government to examine the growing number of sudden deaths among young people.
The deceased, identified as Likhith Amin, was the son of an autorickshaw driver from Surathkal and studied at Government High School, Kote Bollaru, Soorinje.

Calling the incident "very painful", Khader said it was deeply concerning that healthy young people and even school students were collapsing unexpectedly.
"For some years now, we have been seeing young people, healthy individuals, and now even school students collapsing suddenly and losing their lives like this. The minister added that while investigations had been conducted into similar cases in the past, the government now wants a comprehensive analysis of the underlying causes.
Government to Consult Heart Specialists
Khader said he plans to hold discussions with the Medical Education Minister and leading cardiologists to determine whether there are common medical factors behind such incidents.
"Different reasons are cited at different times, but we want to thoroughly analyse what the root cause is," he said.
Annual School Health Checks Already in Place
Responding to questions about mandatory health screening for students, Khader said Karnataka already conducts annual medical examinations in government schools under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK).
Under the programme, health teams visit schools once every year, conduct comprehensive health checkups and refer children with abnormalities for free treatment or surgery.
However, the minister acknowledged that the increasing number of sudden deaths among children and young adults remains a serious concern requiring further investigation.
