New Delhi, May 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government has reportedly asked the Supreme Court collegium to "re-think" on proposed elevation of two judges to the apex court. The Supreme Court collegium had in April recommended names of Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court Aniruddha Bose and Gauhati High Court Chief Justice of AS Bopanna for their appointment to the top court.

According to a report, the central government has returned the Supreme Court collegium's recommendation over seniority concerns. The collegium will soon meet again to discuss the government's objections, NDTV reported. The apex court has vacancies for four judges. The collegium, however, had said it considered all factors while recommending the names. Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Names of 5 Judges as Chief Justices of High Courts.

"While recommending the names of Mr. Justices Aniruddha Bose and A.S. Bopanna, the Collegium has taken into consideration, apart from their merit and integrity, combined seniority on all-India basis of Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of High Courts. The Collegium has also kept in mind the desirability of giving due representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court, as far as possible, to all the High Courts," a press release uploaded in the apex court's website read. CJI Ranjan Gogoi Gets Clean Chit in Sexual Harassment Case by Supreme Court's In-House Panel.
