Mumbai: 75-Year-Old Man Dies of Heart Attack During CJP Protest at Shivaji Park (Video)
A 75-year-old man died after suffering a heart attack while attending a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on Friday, police said. The demonstration was organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
A 75-year-old man died after suffering a heart attack while attending a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on Friday, police said. The demonstration was organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The deceased was identified as Gopalakrishna Subbaiya Pillai, a resident of Thane. According to police, Pillai reached Shivaji Park at around 4:30 pm to witness the protest. About half an hour later, he complained of chest pain.
With the help of a friend and police personnel deployed at the protest site, Pillai was taken to Sushrusha Hospital near Shivaji Park for treatment. The incident took place as hundreds of people gathered at Shivaji Park for the CJP's demonstration seeking Kumar's ouster. The party has alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise and has demanded greater transparency in the electoral process. The protest was held amid heightened security, with additional police personnel and barricades deployed around Shivaji Park. The gathering proceeded despite reports that Mumbai Police had earlier denied permission for the demonstration. Actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, along with singer Vishal Dadlani, were among those reported to have attended or joined the gathering. The CJP has said its protests will continue in other parts of the country over its demands concerning the Election Commission and electoral rolls. The Election Commission, meanwhile, has maintained that decisions of the three-member commission, including those related to SIR, were taken unanimously.
