Six people have died after a "ground-plus-three" structure collapsed onto neighboring shanties in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday evening. The tragedy occurred in Janata Nagar, Mandala, amid heavy, relentless monsoon rainfall that has severely disrupted life across Mumbai and its adjoining suburbs over the past several days. According to the Mumbai Police and local officials, the incident took place at approximately 8:30 PM. A three-story structure-reportedly built just last year-collapsed directly onto two to three adjacent houses, trapping multiple residents under the heavy debris.
Emergency services, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), mobilized quickly following notifications from the civic control room. Around 45 NDRF rescuers from teams based in Andheri and Kurla arrived at the scene within 35 minutes of being alerted. Mumbai: Six Dead as Shanties Collapse in Mankhurd Amid Heavy Rains.
NDRF Assistant Commandant Sarang Kurve stated that the rescue teams faced highly challenging conditions due to the complex nature of the collapsed structure and ongoing severe weather. Despite these obstacles, emergency personnel successfully extracted six victims from the debris, all of whom were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where they were later pronounced dead.
Local representatives reported that the victims included a woman and five children from the same family. Search and rescue operations continued through the night to ensure no other individuals remained trapped, with officials looking for an additional missing child and the suspected owner of the building.
The fatal collapse has intensified political scrutiny regarding unauthorized and unsafe housing structures in Mumbai's densely populated pockets. Maharashtra Samajwadi Party President Abu Azmi publicly questioned the government’s oversight, demanding accountability for the ongoing proliferation of illegal shanties. Azmi urged strict legislative action, pointing out that administrative laxity often allows unsafe, unauthorized multi-story huts to be constructed by families lacking options for affordable housing. Echoing these concerns, Maharashtra AIMIM General Secretary Ateeque Ahmad Khan confirmed the structural timeline, noting that the newly constructed three-story building gave way suddenly during the peak evening hours. Following the incident, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the hospital to meet with and console the families of the victims.
The Mankhurd collapse is part of a broader wave of rain-related incidents troubling Mumbai as the region endures a heavy monsoon spell. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously issued an orange alert for the area, prompting authorities to order the closure of schools across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The heavy downpours have triggered widespread logistical challenges, including severe waterlogging, train delays, and multiple reported instances of uprooted trees and minor structural failures across the city, putting civic body resources on high alert.
