Mumbai Traffic Police has announced temporary traffic restrictions on the Mumbai Coastal Road during early morning hours on May 14 and May 15 to facilitate testing of emergency systems installed along the corridor.

According to the notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Traffic, the Coastal Road will remain closed from 1:00 am to 6:00 am on both days. Authorities said the move is aimed at ensuring safety and preventing congestion during the testing exercise. Mumbai CNG Price Hike: Mahanagar Gas Raises Rates in MMR Region, Check Latest Prices.

Mumbai Coastal Road Closure

On May 14, northbound traffic on the Coastal Road will remain closed between 1:00 am and 6:00 am. Police said vehicles travelling northbound will be diverted through Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road, B. D. Somani Junction, Princess Street Bridge, Bal Bhavan and Mafatlal Junction before proceeding through routes under the D.B. Marg Traffic Division.

The diversion route will continue via Vinoli Chowpatty and Bandra Band Stand before reconnecting to the Coastal Road through Amarson Junction and designated connecting routes. Mumbai Water Cut: BMC Announces 10% Water Cut in City and Surrounding Areas Starting May 15; Citizens Urged To Use Water Sparingly.

Southbound Traffic Closure on May 15

On May 15, southbound traffic on the Coastal Road will remain shut during the same time period. According to the traffic notification, vehicles will be diverted from Amarson Junction towards Stephen Church and Kemps Corner before moving through routes managed by the D.B. Marg Traffic Division.

Traffic will then proceed through Vinoli Chowpatty and adjoining roads towards respective destinations. Authorities advised motorists to follow diversion instructions and plan travel accordingly during the temporary restrictions.

Traffic police said the temporary closure is necessary to carry out testing of emergency systems installed along the Coastal Road corridor. The testing exercise is intended to improve operational safety and traffic management along one of Mumbai’s key transport routes.

Officials stated that the restrictions are limited to early morning hours to minimise inconvenience for regular commuters.

Separately, a group of 102 Mumbai-based architects and urban planners has opposed a proposed underground public parking project planned at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse. The project forms part of the Maharashtra government’s broader plan to create a 300-acre public park at the racecourse, including reclaimed land from the Coastal Road project.

The group, identifying itself as the Mumbai Architects Collective, wrote to Devendra Fadnavis and Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani seeking intervention against the proposal. “We are not opposed to improving public access. We are opposed to building underground complexes beneath one of the city’s last large, natural, flood-absorbing grounds,” the group stated.

The architects argued that the project extends beyond a public garden initiative and carries wider environmental, financial and commercial implications for the city.
