Mumbai, July 2: A 60-year-old man died after falling into an open manhole during civic drainage maintenance work in Mumbai's Sakinaka area on Thursday afternoon. The victim was later identified as Aslam Isak Shaikh, a resident of Yadav Nagar. His body was recovered from the drainage system following a search operation by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).
The incident was reported at around 12.26 pm on Khairani Road near Sanman Hotel, close to SJ Studio.
According to the MFB, three contractual maintenance workers had removed the manhole cover to carry out repair work on a drainage grill when Shaikh, who was reportedly talking on his mobile phone, accidentally stepped into the open manhole and was swept away by the strong flow of rainwater. The workers immediately lowered a ladder into the manhole in an attempt to rescue him but recovered only his umbrella and slippers. Due to the heavy flow of water inside the drainage channel, officials were initially unable to determine the direction in which he had been swept away. The Mumbai Fire Brigade, along with other emergency response agencies, launched a search operation soon after receiving the alert.
In an update issued later in the afternoon, the MFB confirmed that Shaikh's body had been located inside the drainage system and subsequently retrieved.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are expected to examine whether adequate safety measures, including barricading and warning signs around the open manhole, were in place while the maintenance work was being carried out.
The incident comes amid heavy monsoon rains in Mumbai, which have increased the risk of accidents due to waterlogged roads and overflowing drains.
