Mumbai, Sep 29: The costliest public toilet will be opened for citizens at Marine Drive in Mumbai on October 1, a day before Gandhi Jayanti. Built at the cost of Rs 94 lakh, the five-seat toilet works on vacuum technology. The lavatory is constructed opposite to Air India office along the Marine Drive. Two of the five seats in the toilet will be reserved for women.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) constructed the toilet under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme. This will be the first such facility in the region from Princess Street to the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). Moreover, solar panels have been made on the toilet's roof which will provide power to the structure. A committee, formed by the Bombay High Court to grant permission for construction along the Marine Drive, has approved the costliest lavatory at the iconic place, said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner of A Ward, as reported by a leading daily.

Usually, the construction price of a seat of toilet ranges from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh. However, a toilet seat at the Marine Drive costs around Rs 19 lakh. This is the first vacuum toilet in the city.
