Mumbai, July 28: Heavy rainfall in Mumbai since Friday threw normal life out of gear, triggering flood-like situations in several parts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted "heavy to very heavy" rains in Mumbai on Sunday. The intense spell of rain is likely to continue in the districts of Thane, Raigad and Mumbai for the third consecutive day today. In the wake of the weather conditions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said it was prepared for the monsoon onslaught and asked citizens to be careful. The civic body alerted its citizens about the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall tomorrow accompanied by lightning during the day. It said citizens can call on 1916 helpline number for any assistance. Though Mumbai continued to get intermittent showers, the worst-hit places were Thane and Ratnagiri with towns of Ulhasnagar, Murbad, Badlapur, Tiwala, Vangani, Khed, Mangaon, Mandangad, Chiplun. On Saturday, heavy rain lashed Palghar, Pune and Nashik, with the IMD forecasting similar weather for the next couple of days in the entire coastal regions including Mumbai.

Heavy showers were reported in the Thane belt and very very heavy rains in areas beyond Kalyan. The water from city area in Ambernath and Badlapur gushed onto railway area, which led to the Central Railways suspend trains from Kalyan to Karjat/Khopoli. Around 550 people stranded in the towns of Kalyan, Dombivali, Badlapur and Titwal were also saved from the flood waters by the rescue teams till this evening.
