Mumbai, December 15: A student of Somaiya College of Nursing collapsed while playing tug of war game and later died. The incident took place on Friday when students gathered at Somaiya Vidyavihar campus on Day two of their sports day. The deceased was identified as Jibin Sunny, who was a second-year student of nursing in the college.

"Jibin: 19 years, a healthy nursing student and an athlete collapsed, while he was participating in a tug of war game. It is a very unfortunate incident. Our heartfelt condolences to the Jibin Sunny's family, his teachers and his friends. We stand with them on this difficult time. Our prayers for giving all, strength in this time (sic)," authorities at Somaiya College of Nursing said in a statement.

A student who was present at the spot told a newspaper that during the tug of war game Jibin had placed the rope behind his neck to assert more force. "He collapsed the next moment. People administered CPR but he did not respond," the witness was quoted as saying. Jibin was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar.

Dr Vidya Thakur, medical superintendent of Rajawadi Hospital, said that Jibin was brought dead to the hospital's emergency unit. "We couldn't do anything as he was dead by the time he was brought here," she was quoted as saying. A doctor said Jibin was obese and physical stress could have left him tired and breathless, which possibly led to his fall.

A case of accidental death was registered by the Tilak Nagar police. Cops are awaiting the post-mortem examination report which will ascertain the exact cause of death.
