Mumbai Weather Forecast and Update: IMD Issues Red Alert for City, Thane and Palghar Till July 5

The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar for July 4–5, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall. The late monsoon downpours have caused severe waterlogging, transit delays, and one fatality in Chandivali. Disaster teams are on standby, while the intense rain has helped replenish the city's low lake water stocks.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its first red alert of the monsoon season for Mumbai, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall for Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5. The weather bureau has warned that isolated locations could see extremely heavy downpours. Following a late monsoon onset that has already disrupted normal city life over the past week, regional authorities have declared school holidays and mobilised disaster response teams to handle potential urban flooding.

Regional Red Alerts and Safety Protocols

The IMD’s high-intensity weather warning extends across the metropolitan corridor. Neighbouring districts - including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad - have also been placed under a red alert for the weekend due to the "very likely" probability of severe spells. Thane Weather Forecast & Update for Today, Saturday, 04 July 2026: Expect Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds, High of 26°C.

In light of the safety risks, school administrations in several affected areas declared a holiday for Saturday classes. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid non-essential travel. Concurrently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put its civic disaster management cells on standby and instructed residents to track local updates via emergency helplines.

Waterlogging and Infrastructure Disruption

Continuous rain over the last 24 hours has already brought substantial accumulation to the region. The Mumbai city area received an average of 158 mm of rain, while the suburbs registered 205 mm. Key monitoring stations recorded high localised volumes:

  • South Mumbai: Wadi Bunder recorded the highest city rainfall at 150.2 mm, followed closely by Malabar Hill at 145.8 mm and Sandhurst Road at 140.8 mm.
  • Suburbs: Andheri recorded 136.6 mm, while the Powai region registered 124 mm.

The heavy precipitation triggered immediate waterlogging in familiar low-lying spots, including Dadar, Andheri, Goregaon, and Parel. While municipal teams noted that floodwaters began receding in certain areas by morning, commuters faced slow-moving road traffic and operational delays across the local train network. Maharashtra Rains-Weather Forecast: State on High Alert As CM Devendra Fadnavis Shares Emergency Helpline Numbers.

Civic officials confirmed a fatal incident in the Chandivali area on Thursday, July 2, where a man died after being swept into an open manhole that had been entirely hidden from view by deep waterlogging.

Reservoir Replenishment and Extended Forecast

While the intense system has strained city infrastructure, the heavy downpours have provided critical relief to Mumbai's primary water supply. Following a drier-than-usual June that left the city facing supply shortages, the recent July spells have driven the collective water stock of Mumbai's seven key supply lakes up to 1.29 lakh million litres, or roughly 8.93 per cent of total reservoir capacity. The weather department expects the active monsoon phase to maintain momentum into next week. The IMD's extended forecast projects heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated spots on Monday, July 6, before the system gradually tapers off to moderate or heavy rainfall at a few places by Tuesday, July 7.
