The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food license of Mumbai’s historic K. Rustom ice cream parlour following an inspection that revealed severe health and hygiene violations. Officials ordered the immediate closure of the popular South Mumbai establishment after discovering live rodents, houseflies, and expired ingredients on the premises.
The enforcement action was taken against the outlet located at Brabourne Stadium House on Veer Nariman Road in Churchgate. According to an official FDA press release, the establishment failed to meet the strict sanitation requirements mandated under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. During the surprise inspection, food safety officers documented multiple structural and operational lapses. Alongside the pest infestations, the outlet failed to maintain its cold chain operations—a critical requirement for preserving dairy products safely. Inspectors also noted a failure to produce mandatory food safety records, alongside the storage of expired flavoring agents and products.
As a result of these deficiencies, the FDA issued an immediate suspension order under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act. The establishment has been ordered to halt all operations until the safety issues are fully rectified and approved by regulatory authorities.
The regulatory crackdown comes as a part of the ongoing "Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra" public health campaign championed by Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. In addition to ordering the closure, officials collected ice cream samples from the parlour to undergo formal laboratory testing for potential contamination and fat content verification.
