Chandrasekaran’s Tenure
Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and rose through the ranks at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), becoming its chief executive in 2009. He took over as chairman of Tata Sons in February 2017, succeeding Ratan Tata.
During his tenure, the Tata Group expanded its presence across sectors including airlines, electronics, semiconductors, batteries and digital services. Tata Sons is the principal holding company of the group, overseeing major businesses such as TCS, Tata Motors and Air India.
Leadership Transition Ahead
Chandrasekaran’s decision sets the stage for a leadership transition at one of India’s largest business groups. The immediate focus is expected to remain on the August 18 AGM and the process for determining future leadership at Tata Sons. Neither Chandrasekaran nor Tata Sons had publicly commented on the resignation at the time of the latest reports.
