A routine house-hunting trip turned into a violent ordeal on Tuesday evening, August 11, when a couple was viciously attacked by a pet pitbull in the Ghuman Nagar area of Patiala. The victims, identified as Ankit Sabharwal and his wife Shifali, sustained severe injuries and are currently undergoing medical treatment. Purported CCTV footage of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the dog lunging at the couple the moment the property gate was opened.

Details of the Dog Attack in Patiala

According to Ankit Sabharwal, the couple had arrived at the residence accompanied by a property dealer to inspect the premises. "We had gone to inspect the property we were planning to rent. Suddenly, the dog came out and attacked us," Ankit stated, reports Hindustan Times. The dog reportedly targeted Shifali first, mauling her arm and other parts of her body. Ankit sustained deep bite wounds on his legs and back while attempting to shield his wife from the animal. Shifali required surgery for her injuries and remains hospitalised.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Ankit said, "I was going to see a house, along with my wife. I was called to see the property for rent. As soon as we reached there and opened the latch on the gate, the dog attacked us. My wife and I were injured. I have received stitches all over my body." He also revealed that his wife has undergone surgery on her arms and legs. "I want justice. The dog did not stop even after being ordered by its owner. My wife is under observation after surgery," he added.

Municipal Action and Legal Proceedings

In response to the public outcry following the attack, Patiala Mayor Kundan Gogia announced plans to implement a ban on keeping aggressive dog breeds within city limits. "Keeping aggressive dog breeds as pets would be banned in the city," Gogia told reporters, adding that the proposal will be formally discussed at an upcoming municipal corporation House meeting to consider a special resolution. Patiala Municipal Corporation Commissioner Pooja Grewal confirmed that, under current regulations, breeds like pitbulls are classified as highly ferocious and are not permitted as pets. "It is very unfortunate. Our teams have already approached the victims. We are checking all the records and will also take action in the matter," Grewal stated.

We Will Register a Case Under Section 291 of the BNS, Says DSP Jangjeet Randhawa

Meanwhile, local police have initiated the process of registering an FIR against the dog owner. According to officials, the case is being filed under Section 291 (negligent conduct with respect to an animal) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Speaking to news agency IANS, DSP Jangjeet Randhawa said, "As soon as we receive the medical report (rukka) from Amar Hospital - which has not arrived yet but is expected soon - we will register a case under Section 291 of the BNS. This section applies to cases involving injuries caused by a pet animal, and an FIR will be registered accordingly..."
