Mumbai, November 12: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an application in Pune Session Court on Monday seeking permission to add Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) charges against the accused of Narendra Dabholkar murder case. This comes after the key suspect Sachin Prakashrao Andure was arrested by the CBI for the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar.

Andure, a resident of Aurangabad, was nabbed by the CBI on August 19 evening. According to the CBI, Andure was one of the shooters who fired at Dabholkar. He was arrested after a tip from Anti Terror Squad (ATS), when ATS arrested three people for planning to carrying out blast. The ATS reported that during questioning, one of them revealed direct participation in Dabholkar's murder. Narendra Dabholkar Murder Case: Sachin Andure, the Main Shooter, Sent to CBI Custody Till August 26.

Dabolkar was a social worker and was actively advocating against superstition. He founded Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS), which had been working against the eradication of superstition in society. From 2010, He and his party made several attempts to get an anti-Superstition law passed by Maharashtra government. However, his attempts were strongly opposed by Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena who thought that this law will go against the Hindu culture.

On August 20, 2013, Dabholkar was shot dead by two shooters when he was out for a morning walk. His killing was condemned by several political leaders and social activists. Soon after his assassination, the Maharashtra cabinet cleared Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Ordinance and in December 2013 the ordinance was enacted.
