New Delhi, November 16: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) which handles the environmental issues on Friday directed automaker Volkswagen to deposit an interim amount of Rs 100 crores to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in a case related to the allegations of German automaker using 'cheating device' in an emission test of its diesel car vehicles. Audi Global CEO Rupert Stadler Arrested in Volkswagen Emission Scandal.

This decision was taken after the bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel formed a committee with the officials of Ministry of Heavy Industries, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Ministry of Environment and Forests and Automotive Research Association of India to calculate the actual quantum of the environmental loss.

The NGT directed the committee to submit a report within a month and asked Volkswagen and the petitioner in the case to appear before the green panel with their contention. German Carmaker BMW's Profit Dips in ‘Volatile’ Times.

The NGT was hearing a plea filed by a school teacher Saloni Ailawadi and others seeking a ban on automaker for an alleged violation. The carmaker had earlier submitted a roadmap to NGT for recalling more than 3.23 lakh vehicles fitted with a 'defeat device' to pass formal emissions testing.

This comes after the Volkswagen was accused of using 'cheat devices' also known as 'defeat device' for passing the emission test and performance test. The German car maker admitted to the crime and said it has used cheat devices in more than 11 million cars including 8 million in Germany itself.
