Volkswagen Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume has described the automaker's current financial situation as more than critical, warning that several of its German manufacturing facilities face an uncertain decade ahead. As Europe's largest carmaker prepares for high-stakes restructuring talks, the leadership is emphasizing the urgent need to address weak profitability, excess production capacity, and soaring overhead costs.

As per a People Matters report, Blume addressed employees via an internal communication ahead of planned company meetings, highlighting that structural changes are necessary to secure the group's long-term survival. The carmaker is currently grappling with mounting competitive pressures from Chinese manufacturers, falling demand across key global markets, and the heavy financial burden of transitioning toward electric vehicles. More Layoffs Coming! Volkswagen Layoffs: Profitability Challenges at Key German Facilities

While management has not issued final decisions regarding plant closures, Blume explicitly identified four manufacturing sites that lack a clear path to long-term economic viability heading into the 2030s. These vulnerable locations include the plants in Emden, Hannover, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm.

As per a The Economic Times report, the company's overhead expenses remain more than 30 percent higher than those of comparable competitors. Furthermore, Blume noted that the European market suffers from an excess production capacity of approximately 500,000 vehicles annually, compounding the urgency for deep operational adjustments.

VW Restructuring Strategy and Labor Opposition

The manufacturer is already navigating a massive workforce reduction initiative involving previously announced plans to cut 50,000 jobs across the group, with agreements reportedly secured with 37,000 employees. Leadership maintains that factory closures remain a last resort due to their high financial cost, prompting exploration into alternative industrial uses for certain sites, such as potential defense-sector partnerships for the Osnabrueck facility. Visa Layoffs: Former Employee Shares Shock as Manager and Team Let Go, Says 'Lucky That I Left Visa'.

These drastic measures have predictably drawn sharp criticism from labor representatives and union leaders, who argue that workers have already accepted substantial concessions. As the supervisory board prepares for crucial discussions on September 4, management faces intense pressure to balance fiscal restraint with labor stability in its home market.
