New Delhi, December 18: After the court set a one-week deadline for convicts in the gangrape and murder case of Nirbhaya, the Tihar jail administration has issued a notice to the four convicts, asking them to use their final legal remedies within the next seven days. Only after the final remedies are exhausted, the court would issue the death warrant against them. Nirbhaya Gangrape-Murder Case: Court Delays Execution, Adjourns Hearing on Issuance of Death Warrant to January 7.

Earlier in the day, a single-judge bench headed by Justice Satish Kumar Arora did not issue the death warrant against the Nirbhaya convicts. He posted the matter for hearing on January 7, while asking the Delhi Police to issue a notice to the convicts, informing that they have a week's period to file their final mercy pleas.

Hours after the court's direction, the administration of Tihar jail obliged with the order. "Tihar jail administration has issued a notice to Nirbhaya gang rape case convicts saying they have 7 days to file mercy petition," said Director General (Prison) Sandeep Goel.

Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi had broke down before the court after it adjourned the matter till January 7. Justice Arora attempted to console her by saying that he sympathises with her plight by the law binds him to uphold the rights of convicts as well.

Devi marked her dissent outside the courtroom as well, pointing out that her strive for justice is being delayed despite the bitter battle she has fought for last seven years. "The court has given them (convicts) to time to seek remedy. Court is only looking at their (convicts) rights and not ours. There is no guarantee that a judgement will be given on next date of hearing," she said.
