Operation Sindoor Launched After Pahalgam Attack
Operation Sindoor was launched in May 2025 following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 civilians were killed. The Indian Armed Forces carried out precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, describing the operation as a measured response aimed at dismantling terror facilities while avoiding military escalation. Operation Sindoor 1st Anniversary: 6 Pillars of the Anti-Terror Strike in Pakistan.
The operation involved coordinated action by the Army, Air Force and other security agencies. In the days that followed, India also responded to cross-border attacks and heightened military activity along the frontier.
Recognition of Service and Sacrifice
Until now, the identities of the personnel who lost their lives during Operation Sindoor had not been officially made public. The inclusion of their names at the National War Memorial is being viewed as a formal acknowledgement of their service and sacrifice.
The National War Memorial serves as India's official monument honouring members of the armed forces who have laid down their lives in the line of duty since Independence. The latest addition ensures that the personnel who died during Operation Sindoor are permanently commemorated alongside other fallen soldiers.
Operation Sindoor remains one of India's most significant recent military operations, carried out in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Since its conclusion, the government has highlighted the operation as an example of coordinated military action against cross-border terrorism.
The release of the names of the six personnel comes more than a year after the operation, offering official recognition to those who made the supreme sacrifice during the mission and ensuring their contribution is permanently recorded at the National War Memorial.
