The suspect, identified as Akash Ramdas Baraskar, sustained a leg fracture and severe bodily injuries in the suicide attempt and is currently undergoing treatment under police surveillance at a government hospital.
The deceased, 28-year-old Shubhangi Akash Baraskar, succumbed to deep stab and incised wounds to her neck before emergency personnel could reach the apartment, India Today reported. The couple, who married in 2023 and resided in Dehugaon, had reportedly been locked in frequent arguments regarding financial allocations and property investments. Frequent Clashes Over Village Farmland Investment
According to the police complaint lodged by Shubhangi's father, Satish Kait, a recurring disagreement over real estate investments had strained the couple's marriage for months. Akash had purchased an agricultural plot in his native Wagha village in Ahilyanagar district roughly five to six months ago.
Shubhangi strongly opposed the village acquisition, urging that their financial savings be directed toward buying residential property in Pune, where they lived and worked. Her father alleged that despite Shubhangi being three months pregnant, Akash repeatedly neglected her care and engaged in bitter verbal fights over the funds utilized for the rural transaction. The dispute reignited in the early hours of Sunday between 4:30 am and 5:30 am inside their rented flat. During the altercation, Akash allegedly attacked Shubhangi with a sharp-edged weapon, inflicting fatal lacerations to her neck.
Following the fatal assault, Akash reportedly stabbed himself with a blade before leaping from the second-floor balcony in an effort to take his own life. Neighbours, who had heard the couple quarrelling late into the morning, rushed to the courtyard upon hearing the thud and alerted local law enforcement.
A team from the Dehu Road police station arrived at the scene, recovered the body of the deceased woman, and rushed the injured engineer to the hospital. A senior police official stated that physical evidence from the room and forensic analysis confirm that Akash attacked his wife prior to inflicting injuries upon himself and jumping.
Based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family, Dehu Road police have registered a murder case against Akash Baraskar under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigating officers confirmed that the engineer will be formally arrested and remanded into judicial custody once doctors certify him medically fit for discharge.
