Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surendra Lamba confirmed on Saturday that Lovepreet Singh died shortly after the assault. His sister-in-law, Gurjit Kaur, who rushed to his rescue during the incident, sustained catastrophic burns and passed away a few days ago. The incident came to light globally after closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage surfaced online, detailing the violent confrontation. The video shows Lovepreet engaged in a physical scuffle and a heated argument with his brother-in-law, Sajan Singh. Moments later, an individual is seen pouring a flammable substance over Lovepreet before igniting it with a lighter. The flames quickly spread, engulfing both Lovepreet and Gurjit Kaur as they ran in panic. The accused, Sajan Singh, was also caught in the blaze and suffered severe burns, but he was rescued by bystanders at the scene. He remains in police custody under murder charges.
According to the police investigation, Lovepreet, a resident of Lopoke village in Amritsar, had been married to Sandeep Kaur for approximately nine months. Following a dispute early in their marriage, Sandeep had returned to live with her parents in Sangha village. SSP Lamba stated that a formal murder case has been registered. In addition to detaining Sajan Singh, law enforcement authorities have also arrested the deceased's wife, Sandeep Kaur, in connection with the fatal attack.
