A 23-year-old woman has died after suffering severe burn injuries in an alleged attack by her live-in partner at a rented apartment in Gurugram's Sohna Road area. Police have arrested the 35-year-old accused, who allegedly set the woman on fire after she confronted him over concealing the fact that he was already married.
A 35-year-old businessman has been arrested by Gurgaon police for allegedly setting his 23-year-old partner on fire following a dispute regarding his marital status. The victim sustained critical burn injuries during the altercation at a flat on Sohna Road and died on June 27 at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, eight days after the incident occurred, as reported by TOI.
The accused, a resident of Jhajjar district who operates a gold shop in Gurgaon, was taken into custody by Sector 9A police officers. Authorities have officially booked him under Section 103 (Murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Gurgaon Shocker: 29-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Drugged, Gang-Raped Inside Spa Centre; Accused on the Run After Threatening Her With Video of the Act.
Background of the Dispute
According to police investigators, the victim, a resident of Basai, had been in a relationship with the accused for approximately one-and-a-half years. The two originally met at his gold shop. The relationship reportedly deteriorated after the woman discovered that the man was already married, which led to frequent and intense arguments between them.
On June 18, a major altercation took place at the accused's shop. During the dispute, the woman poured kerosene, which was kept on the premises, onto her own clothes. Following the confrontation, she booked a short-term rental flat on Sohna Road, where the couple stayed overnight. Gurugram Shocker: Boyfriend Sets 19-Year-Old Live-in Partner’s Private Parts on Fire After Pouring Sanitiser; FIR Registered.
The Incident and Initial Delays
Investigators state that another argument broke out on the morning of June 19 inside the Sohna Road flat. During this fight, the man allegedly set her clothes on fire. He subsequently transported her to Artemis Hospital for emergency care, from where she was quickly transferred to Safdarjung Hospital due to the extreme severity of her burns.
Initial legal proceedings faced delays when the incident occurred. "When police reached Artemis Hospital on June 19 after receiving information about the burn injuries, the victim and her mother declined to initiate legal proceedings or give a statement," said Sandeep Turan, a spokesperson for the Gurgaon police.
Deathbed Statement Leads to Arrest
The criminal investigation shifted significantly after the victim succumbed to her injuries. On June 30, the woman's cousin approached local law enforcement to file a formal complaint.
The cousin alleged that the victim spoke to him from her hospital bed before passing away. According to his statement, she confided that the accused had set her on fire and threatened to kill her, her mother, and her sister if she disclosed the truth to the police.
Following the formal complaint, police arrested the businessman and recovered a bottle of kerosene from his shop, along with his mobile phone for digital examination. A city court has granted police a two-day custody remand to interrogate the accused, analyze digital evidence, and establish the exact sequence of events.
