At least 115 people, including several children, fell ill due to suspected food poisoning after consuming street food in the Polai Khurd village of the Simalia area in Rajasthan’s Kota district. The incident, which came to light early Wednesday morning, triggered a swift medical response from local administrative and health authorities. According to officials, local residents began complaining of severe vomiting and diarrhea between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM after eating golgappas (pani puri) from a street vendor the previous evening. The affected population includes women, the elderly, and a high number of children.
Kota Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. Narendra Nagar confirmed that a specialized health department team was immediately dispatched to the village to conduct a door-to-door screening across all 128 households. Out of the 115 individuals affected, 12 patients—including five children—experienced relatively severe symptoms and were shifted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Simalia for focused medical care. The remaining 73 individuals were stabilized and treated directly within the village by the medical response team. Preliminary investigations traced the source of the illness to a vendor named Harishankar, who operationalizes his cart from the neighboring Soli village in Digod. A Food Safety team was swiftly deployed to inspect his setup and collect samples. "During our inspection, it was discovered that the vendor was operating without a valid food license," Dr. Nagar stated. "Appropriate legal proceedings will be initiated against him under Section 58 of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006."
