Srinagar, October 20: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate won from a ward in Srinagar Municipal Corporation with just eight votes. BJP candidate Basheer Ahmed Mir was declared winner in ward no 74 after he received eight out nine votes casted. Polling in ward no 74 was held in first phase of Jammu and Kashmir urban local body elections.

Polling in all 74 wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation was held in four phases on October 8, 10, 13 and 16. Kashmir valley recorded low voter turnout during the municipal polls due to boycott by two main regional parties - National Conference and People's Demorcatic Party (PDP) - and threats by militants. Fourth Phase of Municipal Polls in Jammu and Kashmir Ends Peacefully.

Out of 598 wards spanning across 40 municipal bodies in 10 districts of the Kashmir valley, polling was held only in 186 wards. 231 candidates were elected unopposed while there were no candidates on 181 wards. For the remaining 186 seats, the contest was between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress.
