New Delhi, May 6: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to decide before May 6 on the nine pending complaints filed by Indian National Congress Party against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, earlier, said the poll panel was free to pass orders on the complaint of Sushmita Dev, President of 'All India Mahila Congress' and Congress Lok Sabha MP from Silchar in Assam.

Out of 11 complaints, the Election Commission has decided on two complaints. A day after it cleared PM Modi's speech at Wardha under MCC, the EC on Wednesday gave another clean chit to the Prime Minister for his appeal to first times voters by invoking the Balakot Pre-emptive airstrikes in Maharashtra's Latur on April 9. PM Modi Violated Poll Code With 'Roadshow' in Ahmedabad?

On Monday, the Congress moved to the apex court seeking an urgent hearing into the alleged inaction adopted by EC on the MCC violations by PM Modi and Amit Shah. Sushmita filed a petition asking the top court to intervene into the matter and issue necessary directions to the poll body to initiate a probe into MCC violations against the two tallest BJP leaders.

The grand old party has accused PM Modi and Shah of violating the poll code on numerous occasions by purportedly stoking communal passions and referring to the defence forces while reaching out to the voters. The Congress party had filed its first complaint against PM Modi and Shah on April 5, 2019.
