Dramatic scenes unfolded in the Supreme Court on Friday, July 10, after a petitioner appearing in person disrupted proceedings, allegedly hurled abuses at the Chief Justice of India and threw documents inside the courtroom during the hearing of a petition challenging an Allahabad High Court order. Security personnel escorted the litigant out of the courtroom after the disruption.

The incident occurred before a bench of Justice K.V. Viswanathan and Justice Alok Aradhe. Despite the disruption, the bench declined to initiate contempt proceedings against the petitioner and dismissed the Special Leave Petition on merits.

According to courtroom proceedings, the petitioner, who appeared in person, adopted an unusually aggressive tone during his submissions. “Mr judicial servant. I order you to order the registration of an FIR against the ACP … Lucknow," he said, as quoted by Bar and Bench.

Justice Viswanathan immediately questioned the litigant's remarks, asking, “You are ordering me? You are ordering us?" The petitioner responded, “That is all from my side. Everything is on record."

Moments later, he allegedly threw papers into the air and used abusive language against the Chief Justice of India, prompting security personnel to intervene and escort him out of the courtroom.

Bench Declines Contempt Action

Following the disruption, the bench decided not to initiate contempt or any other proceedings against the litigant. “We do not propose to take any action against him. As far as the merits of the case are concerned, we have perused the records and find no good grounds to interfere with the impugned order. The Special Leave Petition is dismissed," Justice Viswanathan said.

Following the hearing, senior advocate P.S. Patwalia reflected on the incident, saying: “It is said that the job of a judge is not easy. On some days, it becomes more visible." Justice Viswanathan responded by expressing sympathy for the petitioner. “He is very disturbed… it’s all frustration. We only have sympathies for him."

The matter before the Supreme Court involved a petition challenging a decision of the Allahabad High Court. While the courtroom proceedings were briefly disrupted by the petitioner's conduct, the bench proceeded to decide the matter on its merits, ultimately dismissing the Special Leave Petition without taking separate action over the courtroom incident.
