Tamil Nadu Extends Maternity Leave to 1 Year for Third Child of Women Government Employees
The Tamil Nadu government has extended paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 365 days for female state government employees delivering their third child. Announced by Minister D. Sarathkumar, the welfare-oriented policy aims to support maternal health and early childcare, removing previous restrictions for families with two or more surviving children.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a major policy update, extending full maternity leave from 12 weeks to 365 days for female state government employees delivering their third child. The decision was announced by Minister for Human Resources Management D. Sarathkumar during the Assembly session on Tuesday, August 18.
Policy Adjustment and Eligibility
According to PTI, previously, female state government employees with fewer than two surviving children were granted a full year of paid maternity leave, while those with two or more children were restricted to a 12-week window. The revised policy removes this restriction for the third child, ensuring that eligible female employees can avail themselves of a full 365-day leave period. "Under these circumstances, as the Tamil Nadu government is a welfare-oriented administration prioritising social welfare and women's empowerment, the maternity leave currently provided for the third child of female government employees will be enhanced from 12 weeks to 365 days," stated Minister Sarathkumar in the state Assembly.
Context and Demographic Shifts
The policy update follows ongoing discussions regarding administrative rules, court observations, and broader demographic trends in southern India. State officials have noted shifting population dynamics, including a total fertility rate that remains below the replacement level. The extended leave provision is designed to support maternal health, early childcare, and work-life balance for public sector employees. A detailed government order outlining the formal implementation and application process is expected to be issued by the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department shortly.
