Hyderabad, January 5: A 23-year-old Dalit house surgeon at a government medical college in Siddipet allegedly died by suicide after being cheated by a senior resident doctor who had promised to marry her, police said on Monday.

According to officials, the young doctor was distressed after the accused refused to marry her, citing caste differences. On January 3, she allegedly self-injected a herbicide inside the college hostel and fell unconscious. Her roommates rushed her to a hospital in Siddipet, from where she was later shifted to a state-run hospital in Hyderabad. Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s sister, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The deceased hailed from a poor family in Jogulamba-Gadwal district and had studied in a social welfare school before joining MBBS at the Government Medical College in Siddipet in 2020. Police said she excelled in academics as well as sports. Her parents are daily-wage labourers, while her elder sister works as a software engineer.

Investigations revealed that the victim met the accused during her internship last year. Police said further probe is underway.
