The New Indian Express reported that the incident allegedly occurred two days before the priest was handed over to police. Police said Sayanna locked the temple’s main entrance and took the minor girl into the sanctum sanctorum, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her. ANI reported that the incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Ramachandrapuram police station in the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate area.
Locals Intervene
Police said local residents noticed the alleged incident and intervened. According to The New Indian Express, they caught the priest at the spot and later handed him over to the police on Saturday.
The report said some locals assaulted the priest before informing authorities. Police subsequently took custody of the accused and began investigating the allegations. ANI reported that locals had also recorded the incident on video before informing the authorities.
Case Registered Under POCSO Act
Police registered a case against Sayanna under the POCSO Act, which provides a legal framework for protecting children from s*xual offences. The accused was arrested and subsequently sent to judicial custody, according to The New Indian Express. The allegations have not been adjudicated by a court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
