Agartala, July 7: Seven people were arrested on Friday in connection with the lynching of a man who was hired by the state government to spread awareness against child lifting rumor mongers in rural areas of Tripura. Sukanta Chakrabarty, the 33-years-old, who was given the task of squashing  rumours to stop lynching, was lynched by villagers on the night of June 28 at Kalacherra Bazaar in South Tripura district.

Reports say that Sukanta Chakrabarty was lynched on suspicion of being a child-lifter. Chakrabarty was lynched just a few hours after a garment seller was beaten to death by villagers in Mohanpur in West Tripura district. The villagers believing fake messages on WhatsApp and other social media platforms about child-lifters thrashed the garment seller and his two friends. Now, seven people have been arrested in connection to the case, reported news agency ANI.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath had blamed blamed the CPI(M) for the lynching incidents, after the incident came to light. But the left party and the Congress held the law minister responsible for the cases. Chief Minister Deb had said that the CPI(M) had hatched the conspiracy (to harm the official) in order to tarnish the image of the government. He had even alleged that those who were arrested in the case were workers of CPI(M) party.
