TVK's Complaint Triggered the Controversy
The controversy began after Udhayanidhi, while addressing a rally on the Cauvery water issue, responded to slogans raised by supporters with a remark that critics interpreted as an indirect reference to actor Trisha Krishnan.
TVK subsequently lodged complaints with the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Tamil Nadu Police, alleging that the statement was vulgar, sexually suggestive and unbecoming of a senior public representative. The party also demanded an unconditional public apology. TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan Slams Udayanidhi Stalin After 'Trisha' Slogans Raised at DMK Event.
Legal and Political Response
Following the registration of the case, Udhayanidhi Stalin moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail, arguing for protection against arrest in connection with the allegations. His legal plea came amid mounting political criticism and demands for action from the ruling party and the BJP.
Meanwhile, TVK announced statewide protests over the issue, while police stepped up security outside Udhayanidhi's residence to prevent any law-and-order problems.
Political Tensions Escalate
The incident has intensified the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling TVK government and the opposition DMK. BJP leaders also criticised Udhayanidhi's remarks, calling them inappropriate and urging strict action.
The DMK has yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations, although the party is expected to challenge the legal proceedings while maintaining that the action against its leader is politically motivated.
Relations between the TVK government and the DMK have remained strained since the change of government in Tamil Nadu earlier this year, with both sides frequently accusing each other of political vendetta. The latest controversy has further heightened tensions, with the matter now moving through both legal and political channels as investigations continue.
