A 10-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district died after being bitten by a snake, with his family alleging serious lapses in emergency medical care at a government health facility. The family claimed that a delay in ambulance services at a community health centre (CHC) caused a loss of crucial time before the child could be taken to a higher medical facility.

The boy, who was bitten on July 6 in Manodherpur village under Triveniganj block of Haidergarh tehsil, was taken to Trivediganj CHC shortly after the incident. According to the family, the snakebite occurred around 5.30 pm. They alleged that doctors at the CHC administered only one dose of anti-snake venom (ASV) before referring the child to a higher medical centre.

The family further claimed that no additional ASV was administered and that the child remained at the CHC for nearly two hours while waiting for an ambulance that did not arrive. Snake Bite in Udaipur: Man Bitten by Snake Carries Reptile to Hospital, Tells Doctors ‘This Is the One That Bit Me’; Video Goes Viral.

As the child’s condition deteriorated, relatives said they were forced to take him to Lucknow in a private vehicle. He died at around 10 pm, after battling for more than four hours following the snakebite.

Protest at Health Centre

The incident led to protests at the CHC, with relatives demanding action against those responsible for the alleged delay. Videos of the confrontation circulated on social media, showing family members seeking details of the doctors on duty and questioning the alleged failure of ambulance services.

The family has demanded strict action and said they will approach senior officials seeking compensation of ₹4 lakh, which is provided by the state government in snakebite-related deaths classified under state-level disasters.

Barabanki chief medical officer Dr Ranjan Gautam said an inquiry would be conducted into the allegations. “I will seek an explanation from the district programme manager of the ambulance service and ask him to report to my office. A show-cause notice will also be issued after a detailed review of the sequence of events,” he said.

“I will specifically inquire why the ambulance failed to reach the CHC on time. Appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible for the lapse,” he added. On the administration of anti-snake venom, Dr Gautam said, “The dosage of anti-snake venom is administered only after assessing the patient’s clinical condition, the severity of envenomation, and the nature of the snakebite wound.”

He also claimed that all 15 CHCs and 55 PHCs in Barabanki have adequate stocks of ASV and that ambulance services are available. He said the inquiry would determine the actual sequence of events.
