A craving for street food turned into a medical emergency in Auraiya, Uttar Pradesh, when a woman dislocated her jaw while eating unusually large golgappas at a market stall. After consuming about 10 pieces, her jaw locked wide open on the final bite, leaving her unable to close her mouth. Following unsuccessful attempts by local doctors to reset the joint, she was referred to a specialized medical college for advanced care.
A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district required emergency medical intervention after suffering an acute jaw dislocation while eating golgappas (pani puri) at a local market stall. The incident occurred when the woman, who had been craving the popular street snack since morning, stepped out to eat after her husband did not join her.
At the vendor's cart, she specifically asked for oversized golgappas and handpicked the largest pieces available. Bystanders and family members were initially stunned by the sudden medical mishap as the woman signaled for help in pain. Her husband arrived at the scene shortly after being contacted and rushed her to the nearby District Joint Hospital for immediate assistance.
Attending physicians, including Dr. Manoj Kumar and Dr. Shatrughan Singh, examined the patient and attempted manual manipulation to reset the dislocated temporomandibular joint back into its natural alignment. However, due to the severity of the joint hyperextension caused by opening her mouth too wide, the initial procedures were unsuccessful.
Given the persistent lock jaw and lack of resolution from initial treatment attempts, the attending doctors provided primary relief measures before referring her to a higher medical facility, Chicholi Medical College, for specialized dental and maxillofacial care.
Medical experts note that severe hyper-extension of the temporomandibular joint, often caused by opening the mouth beyond its normal anatomical limits to bite into large food items, can dislodge the mandibular condyle from its socket, leading to acute locking that requires professional reduction.
