Police in Varanasi have arrested two women accused of stopping and harassing male pedestrians with obscene gestures near the Sigra area of the city, close to the Varanasi Cantt railway station. According to police, the first woman has been identified by the name Jivika, a name police say is fictitious, aged around 42. The second woman, also going by a name police describe as fictitious, is Rubiya, aged around 28. She hails from Malani village under Khutahan police station in Jaunpur district and currently resides in Sudaspur, Manduadih, in Varanasi.

Legal Action Taken

The Sigra Police Station has registered a case, Crime Number 0327/2026, against the two women under Section 296 of the BNS for causing a public nuisance and spreading obscenity in a public place. Police said further legal proceedings against the accused are being carried out as per standard procedure.

Background

The action forms part of a broader special drive being run by the Varanasi Police Commissionerate against crime and offenders in the city. Anti-Romeo squads were originally set up in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 to check harassment of women in public spaces, and continue to patrol areas such as railway stations, bus stops, and educational institutions across the state as part of ongoing public safety measures.
