A 31-year-old Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) jawan, Vikas Lahu Gore, lost his life in a tragic road accident after his motorcycle reportedly hit a large pothole on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway in Maharashtra's Shahapur taluka. The incident has triggered fresh concerns over road safety and the poor condition of highways during the monsoon season.
According to officials, the accident occurred near the Bharangi River bridge when Gore was riding his Royal Enfield motorcycle to work, reported NDTV. Police said he lost control of the bike after it struck a major pothole and crashed into the road divider. Local residents rushed him to the Shahapur sub-district hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Shivamogga Temple Tragedy: Retired Engineer Dies After Getting Trapped Beneath Elevator, Disturbing Video Surfaces.

The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who alleged that the pothole had remained unrepaired despite repeated complaints. They have demanded immediate repair of dangerous stretches along the Mumbai-Nashik Highway and called for accountability from the authorities responsible for highway maintenance.
The Mumbai-Nashik Highway is one of Maharashtra's busiest transport corridors, connecting Mumbai with several districts in northern Maharashtra. However, the route develops numerous potholes every monsoon due to heavy rainfall, posing serious risks to commuters. Motorists have repeatedly flagged the deteriorating condition of the highway, but many stretches continue to remain hazardous.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the accident to determine whether the road condition directly contributed to Gore's death.
Road accidents remain a major public safety challenge in India. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, more than 172,000 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2023, highlighting the urgent need for better road infrastructure, timely maintenance and stricter safety measures to prevent avoidable tragedies.
