Bengaluru's HAL Airport has become the first airport in India to operationalise the Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach procedure, a satellite-guided precision navigation system developed exclusively for helicopters. The system, developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), validated by HAL test pilots and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is expected to improve the safety, efficiency and accessibility of helicopter operations.
According to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the new navigation procedure enables helicopters to fly highly accurate flight paths in all weather conditions while reducing approach time from around 12 minutes to just four minutes. What Is RNP CAT H?
RNP CAT H, or Required Navigation Performance – Category H, is a satellite-based precision navigation procedure designed specifically for helicopters.
Unlike conventional navigation systems that rely primarily on ground-based equipment, RNP CAT H uses satellite guidance to enable helicopters to follow highly accurate and optimised flight paths. This allows pilots to safely navigate around terrain, buildings and other urban obstacles while maintaining greater precision during landing and take-off.

How Will It Benefit Helicopter Operations?
According to HAL, the new system offers several operational advantages. The biggest improvement is the reduction in approach time. Helicopters approaching HAL Airport can now complete their arrival in around four minutes, compared to nearly 12 minutes earlier.
The shorter approach is expected to improve operational efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The technology also enables smoother integration of helicopter traffic with fixed-wing aircraft, increasing overall airspace capacity at busy airports. Additionally, helicopters can follow more precise routes, helping reduce the noise footprint over densely populated urban areas.
HAL Calls It a Major Milestone
HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K described the development as a significant advancement for India's aviation sector. "The operationalisation of India's first RNP CAT H helicopter approach is a significant milestone for the country's aviation ecosystem. This capability enhances the safety, efficiency and accessibility of helicopter operations and establishes a benchmark for similar procedures to be implemented at airports across the country."
HAL also stated: "This system enhances operational efficiency and airspace capacity, enables seamless integration of rotary and fixed-wing operations, reduces noise footprints over cities, and provides faster, safer routes for critical missions such as air ambulance and rescue operations."
Developed by AAI, Approved by DGCA
The RNP CAT H procedure was developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and underwent validation through flight trials conducted by HAL test pilots before receiving approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The system is expected to support a wide range of operations, including emergency medical services, disaster response, search-and-rescue missions, corporate aviation and VIP movements.
Why HAL Airport Was Chosen
HAL Airport handles nearly 50 helicopter movements every day, making it one of India's busiest helicopter hubs. The airport is used by HAL, the National Flight Test Centre (NFTC), the Centre for Airborne Systems and Aircraft (CABS), the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), as well as for VIP flights.
Aviation experts believe the successful implementation of RNP CAT H addresses a long-standing gap in India's aviation infrastructure and could pave the way for similar satellite-guided helicopter procedures at airports across the country.
