Chongtham Vikram Singh, a 54-year-old musician and music teacher from Manipur, died after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of men in southeast Delhi's Kilokari village following a dispute over noise and disturbance outside his residence, police said. Singh, who had lived and worked in Delhi for nearly two decades, was rushed to hospital by his son but later succumbed to his injuries.
According to police, Singh went downstairs from his apartment in the early hours of Monday after objecting to a group of men who were allegedly drinking alcohol, shouting and creating a nuisance outside his residence. He was allegedly attacked by several people and sustained serious injuries. His son, Yaiphaba, took him to Holy Family Hospital, where he later died. Who Was Chongtham Vikram Singh?
Originally from Thangmeiband Lourung Purel Leikai in Imphal West, Singh moved to Delhi nearly two decades ago to pursue his passion for music. According to The Times of India, he had reportedly lived and worked in the national capital for around 17 years and became a respected figure in the Manipuri music community.
Singh played lead guitar for several popular bands in Manipur before establishing a music school in Delhi. He also mentored young musicians at his home and taught at the Delhi School of Music. His musical career included participation in the Rock'n'Roots project, where he collaborated with Rajasthani folk singer Mame Khan. He also performed at various cultural programmes and concerts. Singh was part of a prominent musical family in Manipur. His 86-year-old mother, Chongtham Ongbi Kamala Devi, is a renowned classical and modern Manipuri singer. His cousin, Lakshmipriya Devi, directed Boong, India's first BAFTA Award-winning film. Singh is survived by his wife, Jyotsana, 54, a senior consultant at a multinational company, and his son Yaiphaba, a law student.
Seven Adults Arrested, Juvenile Apprehended
Police have arrested seven adults and apprehended one juvenile in connection with the case. The accused have been identified as Bharat Kumar, Pramod, Ramzan Khan, Deepanshu, Mohan Vishwakarma, Vijay and Mannu, along with one juvenile.
Police said the accused work at different dhabas and food stalls. The investigation is continuing. The case followed the alleged assault after Singh objected to the group over noise and disturbance outside his residence.

Rahul Gandhi Raises Safety Concerns
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also reacted to Singh's death in a post on X, raising concerns over the safety of people from the Northeast living in Delhi. "Chongtham Vikram Singh ji, a renowned musician from Manipur, went downstairs to ask some men to lower the noise outside his home. He was beaten to death for it. A father, killed outside his own home, in his own country's capital. After many such incidents, every Northeast family in Delhi is asking the same question today - are we safe here?," he wrote.
"What are Shah's MHA and Delhi Police doing to stop this growing lawlessness, especially against people from the Northeast? There must be a swift investigation, and the culprits must be brought to justice. My condolences to Vikram ji's family," he added.
The North East Students Society, Delhi University, condemned the incident and called for a swift and thorough investigation. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also expressed grief over Singh's death and sought action against those responsible. The incident has drawn attention to concerns about the safety of people from the Northeast in Delhi, while the police investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding Singh's death.
