The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is hiring a professional event planner to manage logistics and streamline Ganesh idol immersions at Girgaon Chowpatty during Ganeshotsav. The agency will handle VIP arrangements, public announcements, the line-up of major idols, crowd-related facilities, drinking water and other arrangements for the tenth day of the festival.
The move comes as the civic body prepares for the arrival of thousands of idols at one of Mumbai's major natural immersion sites, Mid Day reported. The outsourcing decision also comes amid renewed concerns over safety during the festival following the collapse of Bhuleshwarcha Raja last Saturday, which killed two people and injured five others. Why BMC Is Outsourcing Immersion Logistics at Chowpatty
A BMC official told mid-day, “Various facilities are required for the tenth day of the festival. BMC organises steel plates for the immersion of the very tall idols. The relatively smaller ones, which are still above six feet in height, are sent out on boats for immersion. The line-up is planned based on when large Ganesh idols are expected to arrive — their routes are very long, and members of their mandals always end up informing authorities of their expected arrival timings, ranging from 12 noon on visarjan day to 6 or 7 am the next day.”
Another official involved in the process told mid-day, “The BMC does not have the manpower or expertise required to organise immersions on the tenth day of the festival at Girgaon. Hence it is being outsourced. Every year, an event management agency is hired to manage VIP movement, red carpet arrangements, and the viewing and seating layout for dignitaries. This year, we’re adding the announcement of the line-up of major idols due for immersion and facilities for visitors to the list of the agency’s responsibilities.” The civic body has invited bids for the event-planning work. What The Event Agency Will Handle
The professional agency will be responsible for several logistical aspects of the immersion process. Its duties will include red carpet arrangements, viewing and seating layouts for dignitaries, management of the public address system and announcements about the expected arrival of major Ganesh idols.
The agency will also oversee the line-up of incoming idols and facilities for visitors, including drinking water. The scheduling of major idols is particularly important because several prominent mandals travel long distances before reaching Chowpatty. Their representatives routinely inform authorities about expected arrival times.
Crowd Management And Beach Safety
The BMC has clarified that the event management agency will not be responsible for every aspect of crowd and beach safety. Another official said, “The BMC floats separate tenders for crowd management and beach safety. Lifeguards are deployed via a contract extended by the Mumbai Fire Brigade.”
The BMC will also hire specialised sea divers and a team of experts to help ensure a streamlined immersion process without casualties or injuries. These arrangements will operate alongside the separate crowd-management and safety measures being put in place for the festival.
Why Girgaon Chowpatty Is Important
Girgaon Chowpatty is among Mumbai's major natural immersion sites, along with Dadar, Bandra, Versova, Juhu, Aksa, Marve and Gorai beaches. The BMC also creates 290 artificial immersion ponds across the city. However, beaches remain the primary locations for the immersion of tall Ganesh idols.
More than 7,000 idols from Sarvajanik Mandals were immersed at Girgaon Chowpatty in 2025. Several of Mumbai's prominent and historic idols are also immersed at Chowpatty, including Lalbaugcha Raja, Chinchpoklicha Chintamani, Girgaoncha Raja and Tejukayacha Raja. These are also among the city's tallest Ganesh idols.
Safety Demands After Bhuleshwarcha Raja Collapse
The outsourcing plan comes shortly after the collapse of Bhuleshwarcha Raja, which killed two people and injured five others. Following the incident, Mumbai’s Saarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti wrote to Mayor Ritu Tawde with a 10-point agenda outlining safety protocols it wants followed during this year's Ganesh festival.
Among its key demands, the Samiti has asked the BMC to prepare a list of the main routes used by tall idols, repair damaged roads and remove construction material, tree branches and electric wires along the routes. The Samiti is scheduled to meet the mayor on September 1 to discuss the demands.
Managing Thousands Of Idols
The scale of the immersion operation requires coordination between civic officials, Ganesh mandals, police, safety personnel and other agencies.
The arrival of large idols is staggered based on their routes and expected timings. The BMC's decision to add formal announcements about major idol arrivals to the event agency's responsibilities is intended to improve coordination at the immersion site.
With thousands of idols expected to arrive at Chowpatty, the civic body is also preparing specialised personnel and safety teams to manage immersion activity at sea. The revised arrangements are aimed at keeping the immersion process organised while providing facilities for dignitaries, mandal members and visitors during the tenth day of Ganeshotsav.
