A meeting between senior Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has triggered fresh political speculation within the Congress, coming just a day after the party announced a major organisational reshuffle in Punjab ahead of next year's Assembly elections. Randhawa has denied any link between the two developments, saying the meeting was held solely to discuss security concerns.

The reshuffle retained Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress chief and Partap Singh Bajwa as Leader of Opposition, while appointing Randhawa as chairman of the party's Core Committee.

What Randhawa Said About The Meeting

Speaking after the meeting on Friday, Randhawa clarified that the discussion centred on a letter he had written to the Prime Minister roughly two months earlier. "I was summoned for a meeting during which we discussed the conclusions I had drawn in the final paragraph of my last letter. I pointed out the presence of central agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Military Intelligence (MI), the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). I also emphasised that extortion and threats are rampant across Punjab today," he said. ‘Bhagwant Mann Was Drunk in Punjab Assembly’, Allege Congress and Akali Dal As High Drama Ensues (Watch Videos).

He added that he had written to the Prime Minister on June 4, 2026, with a copy sent to the Home Minister, raising concerns specifically about the situation in Punjab's border districts, including Gurdaspur.

Gehlot Defends Randhawa

Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot came out in support of Randhawa, calling the meeting a natural response to ongoing security concerns. In a post on X, Gehlot said Randhawa and his family had been receiving continuous threats over his firm stand on national interest issues. ‘Lawrence of Punjab’: Congress MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring To File PIL Against OTT Series (See Post).

"It is evident that due to their steadfast stand in the interest of the nation, he and his family have continuously received threats. In such circumstances, ensuring their security is entirely the government's moral and constitutional responsibility. If they meet the Union Home Minister on this serious matter, it is highly regrettable and inappropriate to unnecessarily give a political colour to what is a normal and essential process or to misrepresent it," Gehlot wrote.

Reshuffle Exposes Fault Lines

While the Congress leadership has projected the reshuffle as part of its strategy for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, several leaders have privately expressed dissatisfaction over the appointments and the manner in which they were made.

Congress MP Manish Tewari, who did not receive any organisational responsibility in the reshuffle, posted a cryptic message on X referring to the "insecurities of individuals and institutions." Supporters of former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi have also expressed disappointment, with party insiders indicating they are likely to discuss the developments and chart their future course.

Congress Seeks Unity Ahead Of 2027 Polls

The party is attempting to project a united front in Punjab ahead of the Assembly elections, but the timing of the Randhawa-Shah meeting, coming so soon after the reshuffle, has drawn attention to underlying tensions within the state unit.
